Positive Management Policy

Purpose:

To cultivate a transparent and openly communicative community of principled, caring, and reflective thinkers who strive to be balanced developmentally, emotionally, and academically.

Behaviour Management Strategies:

Students and teachers work together to establish a clear set of positive ‘ground rules’ for the classroom. Agreement to be completed during the first week of classes in the first term and to be reinforced during the first week of classes in the second term.

1、Words like ‘be’ and ‘we are’ are used. Words like ‘no’ and ‘we aren’t’ are not used. Guide students to transform negative rules into positives.

2、Teachers need must have a clear policy for when the tier system starts (give official warning) and must be sure all students fully understand.

Students and teachers work together to establish appropriate consequences for breaking the ground rules.

3、Ground rules are to be clearly displayed in the classroom and referred to when necessary.

4、Ground rules are applied equally to all students at all times.

5、Positive behaviours are to be reinforced with praise and encouragement.

6、Negative behaviours are to be challenged in a calm yet assertive manner. In the first instance, teachers are to try to re-guide student’s choice by offering them alternative and positive options. Teachers are to be open in stating and explaining non-negotiable issues.

7、Teachers are to make an effort to set an example to the students by behaving in a friendly and positive manner themselves, by following the class agreement, and promoting an atmosphere where students and teachers mutually respect and value each other.

8、Teachers are to avoid shouting

9、Teachers are to avoid belittling, using guilt, or threatening

10、Teachers are to facilitate regular and open communication with students in a way which encourages reflection and accountability. This will help students recognize and understand the causes and effects of their actions, which will help them be able to make better choices in the future.

11、Teachers are to work as a team by promptly and openly discussing behaviours with homeroom teachers and coordinators to collectively resolve incidences and issues in a consistent and educational manner.

12、Teachers are to discuss concerns with parents/caregivers after regulation 1.11 in an attempt to help identify the causes of unacceptable behaviour and share strategies to help resolve it.

13、Teachers are to encourage and facilitate mediation between students to try to resolve conflicts by discussing and negotiating.

14、Activities are to be varied and well planned out so that students are not easily bored or distracted.

Handling Negative Behaviours

We require all teachers, other staff,  and students to use positive strategies for handling any negative behaviour. Teachers are to help children find solutions in ways, which are appropriate for the children's ages and stages of development.

When confronted with negative behaviour, teachers  are to be clear to distinguish between ‘disengaged’, ‘disruptive’ and ‘unacceptable’ behaviour.

1、 ‘Disengaged’ behaviour may indicate that a child is bored, unsettled or unhappy. With sensitive interventions, teachers will often be able to re-engage a child in purposeful activity.

2、 ‘Disruptive’ behaviour describes a child whose behaviour prevents other children from accomplishing tasks. Staff will collectively discuss incidents and agree on the best way to deal with the behaviour.

3、 ‘Unacceptable’ behaviour refers to non-negotiable actions and may include discriminatory remarks, violence, bullying or destruction of equipment. Staff will be clear that consequences will follow from such behaviour, including in the first instance, temporarily removing a child from the activity session and automatically put in the ‘tier system’.

When an incidence of negative behaviour occurs, teachers are to listen to the child or children concerned and hear their reasons for their actions. Teachers are to then prompt the student(s) to recognize and understand what was negative about their behaviour and that such actions have consequences for both themselves and for other people.
